The Great Smoky Mountains are a magical place. From the Tail of the Dragon to the rolling hills that bring beauty to the area, there is much to do and see. So what should be the top three things on your family's bucket list?
We’ve got you covered! Here are three of the most magical places you can find in the Great Smoky Mountains.
1. Elkmont Ghost Town
This moss-covered fairyland is actually an old, restored log-cabin resort that was built in the early 1900s and abandoned after the government established the National Park. Today, you can walk through old homes that once housed wealthy vacationers from all over. Elkmont was a huge benefit to the poorer citizens of Appalachia who lived in cabins surrounding the area. They were able to cook and clean for those who came to visit and earn an income like never before.
These homes offer a glimpse into what life was like for people in the past, and a magical air surrounds the cabins as the once-grand homes were first taken over by the elements and then restored.
2. Roaring Fork Motor Trail
This gorgeous piece of the Smokies is just where you want to go on your vacation. It’s a one-way loop that is filled with beautiful views and plenty of wildlife that will have your whole group gazing out the windows in awe.
This road is a magical place, but not just because of the scenery. Many years ago, a legend began about the ghost of a young girl who walked the trail, trying to find her way back home after passing away in a fire in the early 1900s. To read more about the story, click here.
3. House of the Faries
This place was built by Louis E. Voorheis in the mid-1900s and was designed to be powered by hydroelectric power and filled with gardens and other water features. Now, the home is overgrown with moss and trees, but it is still a beautiful and magical place.
To locate this mystical spot, hike along the Twin Creeks Trail until you reach the old stomping grounds of Voorheis. This is a place that you won’t regret visiting, and everyone in your group will love it.
