Comic fanatics visit Pigeon Forge for Yama-Con
Are you a comics fan? Pigeon Forge is just the place for you: The Annual Yama-Con, a convention with an emphasis on anime and Japanese culture with events themed around video games, card and board games, comics and much more, is set for December 5-7, 2014 at The LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge.
“All nerds, gamers, geeks and otaku are welcome!” the event’s Web site says. This year’s theme is “Third Time’s the Charm,” featuring magic, mystery, sorcery and hocus pocus in comics.
Speakers will include Johnny Yong Bosch, Linda Ballantyne, Katie Griffin, Toby Proctor, Susan Roman, Erica Mendez, Lucien Dodge, Martin “Little Kuriboh” Billany, Marianne Miller and Patricia Alice Albrecht.
Johnny Youg Bosch
Bosch got his start as Adam Park, the Black Ranger on “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” which he played for three and a half seasons on TV, in two motion pictures and two special guest appearances in later “Power Rangers” seasons. He became very active as a voice actor for various anime titles, and his voice can be heard in numerous video games. He is also the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band Eyeshine.
Ballantyne has worked professionally on stage, screen and TV for the past 20 years. She has had leads in “Sailor Moon,” “Corduroy,” “The Doodlebops” and “Thomas and the Magic Railroad.” She was contracted as the voice for the Comedy Channel for 13 years and is host of “I’m Just Sayin’” on Canada Talks, Sirius XM’s newest channel.
Griffin has been a professional actor, voice actor and singer for more than 20 years. She has worked with Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close, Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe and voiced hundreds of radio and TV commercials. She has sung on numerous radio jingles and continues to star in popular cartoons – she is best known as Raye/Sailor Mars on “Sailor Moon.”
Proctor has been involved in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years, having worked with Kathy Bates, Diane Wiest and Jon Voight. Credits include “Flash Gordon” and “Sailor Moon.”
Roman, who is known for her role as Sailor Jupiter in “Sailor Moon,” has also been in “The Care Bears” TV series and “Thomas and the Magic Railroad,” as well as movies “Rock and Rule” and “Heavy Metal.”
Mendez is a professional voice-over artist. Her video game works have included “Pac Man and the Ghostly Adventures” and “Witch and the Hundredth Knight,” and in anime, “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” and “Blood Lad.”
Dodge is a voice actor specializing in characters for animation video games, commercials and other media. Credits include “Dust in Dust: An Elysian Tail,” “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” and “Tree Fu Tom.”
Billany has been making internet-based parody videos since 2006, including “Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged.” He has also made strides in the professional voice-over world, having been cast in “Heroes of Newerth and K-On: The Movie.”
Miller has worked on animation and video game projects such as “Monster,” “Fate/Zero,” “Tweeny Witches” and “Avalon Code.” Other credits include “Puello Magi Madoka Magica” and “Sword Art Online.”
Patricia Alice Albrecht
Albrecht has done voice-over work on “Jem and The Holograms” as Pizzazz, Jem’s arch enemy and band leader of The Misfits. She also had roles in “The Young and the Restless,” “Angie,” “Eight Is Enough” and “Remington Steele,” as well as in the horror film “Ghost Dance.”
