A Sporting Good Time
Jan 10, 2012
Even when winter settles into the Smokies, there are lots of ways to get out and get active when visiting Gatlinburg. One popular destination is Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort, located at the top of nearby Mt. Harrison. You can drive to the top and park if you like, but the easiest (and most scenic) way to get there is via the aerial tramway that runs from downtown Gatlinburg directly to the resort.
Once there, you can ski, snowboard and even inner tube down their groomed mountain slopes. Even when Mother Nature isn’t exactly cooperative, they can manufacture snow and optimize skiing conditions, weather permitting. If the ski trails aren’t your thing, then consider some indoor ice skating or riding the resort’s scenic chairlift, which offers stunning views of downtown Gatlinburg and the surrounding Smoky Mountains.
Each January, Ober Gatlinburg also hosts the annual Tennessee Winter Special Olympics, when special athletes from all over the state go for the gold in a variety of competitive winter sports events.
