4 Iconic Places to Enjoy a Colorful Sunrise or Sunset in the Smokies
Mar 19, 2019
Great Smoky Mountains National Park gifts us with sensational sunrises and sunsets daily. As you know, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so not all sunrises or sunsets are accessible in full splendor. However, there are a few ideal places that we can recommend to you. We encourage you to take advantage of the vibrantly painted skies of the Smokies Mountains during your stay! If you haven't already, head on over to Heartland Cabin Rentals and reserve your cabin for your spring or summer stay! We have cabins to suit any mood or group size. We are here to help make your Smoky Mountain experience as exceptional (and as colorful) as possible!
Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief, pollution does NOT create the illusion of a more colorful sunrise or sunset- pollution actually subdues them. In fact, the cleaner the air the more vibrant the colors!
The Foothills Parkway
The recently completed Foothills Parkway is 1-5 minutes from our Wears Valley Cabins! You can reach the upper vantage point and are able to look down into the valley and directly at the ridgelines within a short 20-minute drive! Other known areas of Foothills Parkway are said to have a special "brilliance" to them. From the Foothills Parkway, you can watch the sun dip into the Cumberland Plateau and see brilliant, clear colors.
You can easily find The Morton Overlook along the Tennessee side of the Newfound Gap Road. Newfound Gap Road has several remarkable spots for gazing into the distance, however, The Morton Overlook is renowned for sunrises and sunsets.
The Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook
The Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook is one of the easiest areas to access, though no where near private, other than your Heartland cabin rental. This overlook is a common place to stop on your way in and out of Gatlinburg or the national park due to its convenient location on the Gatlinburg Bypass. This view is the iconic backdrop to Gatlinburg and is also a great place to spot the moon!
A Heartland Cabin Rental
Watch the sun from the comfort of your Heartland cabin rental. It's a great way to end the night as you can go right into counting the stars once the sun fades away. Easily watch the show from your hot tub as well. You can just as easily start your day off with a cup of coffee and a colorful sky to set your day off in the right direction.
