Take a Day Trip to Dollywood on Your Next Visit to Gatlinburg

A few things immediately come to mind when you think of Tennessee: country music, Memphis barbecue, and Dolly Parton. But did you know that Dolly Parton has her very own theme park?

Yes, when you’re looking at the best Gatlinburg things to do, Dollywood is sure to be right at the top of the list. It’s one of the most popular destinations for guests in our cabin rentals in Gatlinburg

History

Dollywood has been a local staple for decades, even in its early days of humble beginnings. Before the theme park was bought by Dolly and transformed into the Dollywood we know today, it was initially opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad. Over the years, it would have its name changed to Goldrush Junction, Goldrush, and Silver Dollar City.

When Dollywood first opened in 1986, it contained four main areas (which are still at the park today): Rivertown Junction, Craftsman’s Valley, Fun Country (now called Country Fair), and Village Square (now called The Village). Today, the park spans over 150 acres and has all kinds of rides, shows, shops, and more to keep you entertained.

Things to Do

There are many great activities to get involved with at Dollywood, starting with the rides. From slower, calmer rides for the younger members of your group to fun, fast-paced roller coasters for the adrenaline junkie, Dollywood has a little something for everyone. You can also attend some awe-inspiring shows that can’t be found at any other theme park, featuring both the classic country music of the area as well as more modern-day hits that everyone will love. In addition to the Dollywood theme park itself, you may also choose to visit Dollywood’s Splash Country water park if you’re staying in the summer months! There’s no question why Dollywood is considered one of the best kid-friendly activities in Gatlinburg.

Places to Eat

While you’re enjoying the sights and sounds of Dollywood, you’re sure to build up an appetite! Luckily, there are several great places to eat right within the park. Sit down to a delicious meal at Aunt Granny’s Restaurant, grab a sweet treat at Blue Ribbon Cones or Crossroads Funnel Cakes, or get something quick to walk around with when you visit Dogs N Taters. Everything is reasonably priced, and all the menus offer something for kids and adults alike.

Hours/Operations

Since Tennessee can get quite cold in the winter months, it’s important to note that Dollywood is not open all year long. Typically, the theme park opens up in mid-March for its summertime operations. The park stays open through December to hold its Christmas celebrations, then Dollywood closes for January and February.

The hours of operation for Dollywood can vary depending on the season. For instance, many days in March, Dollywood is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, in the summer months, hours are extended to 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. most days. Once you know the dates of your trip, check the Dollywood website to see exactly when they’ll be open when you’re in town.
