Namesakes in the Smokies:

Boogertown

We know what you’re thinking- why would anyone name an area with the word booger in there? Back in the Civil War days, booger meant boogieman, ghost, or haint. Boogertown used to be known as Oldham, but once there was a tale about a haunting in the area and livestock were dying one by one. Only a booger (boogieman or ghost) could be to blame. The haunting of Boogertown Road feels very real, especially on a foggy twilight drive!

Pigeon Forge:

A man named Isaac Love who lived from 1783-1854 built an iron forge in the year 1820 alongside the Little Pigeon River. Its location was near that of The Old Mill.

Sugarlands:

The lands here were once covered in sugar maple trees and the settlers would collect the sap from these trees and use it as syrup sweetener in recipes before sugar cane.

Tennessee:

The Cherokee people had a village known as the Overhill Cherokee village called Tanasi. Ta-na-si, Tenn-ess-ee – it is a Southern dialect derivative of the native word.
